Wind Turbine Energy Generation.

A wind turbine works the opposite of a fan. Instead of using electricity to make wind, like a fan, wind turbines use wind to make electricity. The wind turns the blades, which spin a shaft, which connects to a generator and makes electricity.

Small systems known as "microwind" or "small-wind" turbines can produce electricity (energy) to help power the lights and electrical appliances in a typical home and also generate you income from the feed in tariff scheme. 40% of all the wind energy in Europe blows over the UK, making it an ideal country for small domestic turbine energy systems.

Domestic wind turbine mast mounted on the side of a house

There are two types of domestic-sized turbine energy generation systems: Mast mounted: these are free standing and are erected in a suitably exposed position, often rated at around 2.5kW to 6kW

Roof mounted turbine generation units:

these are smaller than mast mounted energy generation systems and can be installed on the roof of a home where there is a suitable wind resource. Often these are around 1kW to 2kW in size.

Wind turbine systems operate from a sustainable energy that will never run out and allows homes to store excess electricity in batteries for days without wind. They also offer relatively low maintenance, with checks every few years, allowing a well maintained system to last over 20 years.

Is your site suitable for a wind turbine generation;

Are there any large obstacles like buildings, trees or hills near your home? Small domestic systems work best in exposed locations, without turbulence caused by these types of obstacles.

Is your home is a windy area? To be effective you need an average wind speed of no less than 5m/s.

Is your home located away from the National Grid? Small domestic generation systems are particularly suitable for use in remote locations where mains electricity is unavailable.

Does a wind turbine generation system need planning permission?

Small domestic generation systems normally do require permission from your local authority, so check before you install a system.

If you are a company looking into installing a wind turbine generation system? You will not only be helping lower CO2 emissions that contribute to climate change but also improving your company's reputation by co-operating with the government's aims at drastically lowering carbon emissions by 2050.
